Dare to Lead by Brené Brown
This book taught me how to lead from a place of vulnerability. If you are starting a company, chances are that you will be leading a team or inspiring other people to become leaders.
Shoe Dog by Phil Knight
This is a really inspiring book for anyone setting up a company or in the midst of growing a company. I think it's a really good example of how you can ride the success but also manage the downfall and pitfalls of a business. There are lots of lessons to be learned from this book.
Traction by Gino Wickman
I recommend this self-help book whether you're thinking about starting a business or if you've already got a business because you can apply these exercises in different ways to all business sizes. It has practical tips — for example, how to make sure you are hiring the best person for the job, not just filling a space.
The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz
This is another brilliant manual for how to make difficult decisions as a leader. How do you hire a brilliant team member if you've actually not done that job before? How do you fire people in your team? It’s really unusual and when I have a problem that is out-of-the-box, I still refer back to it.
That Will Never Work by Marc Randolph
The founder of Netflix wrote a great book about resilience and how sometimes failure is what can make a business really take off. He shares his story of how he started Netflix and, in fact, how before he grasped the concept of Netflix, he had several businesses fail. It's a great lesson in having the encouragement to try again and not be discouraged.
