Roll With It
While it’s not yet cold enough for winter coats, but chilly enough to need an extra layer, consider adding a fine-knit rollneck under your cotton shirts and tanks. Not only does this mean you can wear lighter-weight tops for longer into the season, a rollneck peeking over a collar creates a chic layered look.
Wine Tones
A richer palette always feels desirable at this time of year, and for the season ahead, the focus is firmly on burgundy. The heritage shade was done at Victoria Beckham, Prada and Bottega Veneta – so pull out your burgundy pieces and wear them in a tonal look, or mixed with camel, grey, beige and chocolate brown.
Double Denim
Double denim has been on the style agenda for a few seasons, so it’s certainly worth trying it out. A darker wash chimes with an autumnal mood, so pull out your indigo pieces and play matchy-matchy. Then simply add a sleek bag and boots.
Statement Belts
The benefits of a great belt are numerous. This is the piece that will update your blazers, knitwear, dresses and even coats, not to mention add the luxe factor. This season is all about a cinched silhouette, so place your belt over the top of your outermost layer and wrap it around your waist.
Retro Sneakers
Before boot season takes hold, update your everyday denim with a pair of retro trainers. Opt for a classic Samba or Gazelle in an autumnal shade for a subtle pop of colour. Burgundy, red, green and mustard will work with your darker neutrals and gives off-duty outfits a point of difference.
Cardigan Chic
Whether oversized and slouchy or shrunken and prim, the cardigan is a key piece as we head into autumn. Think of it as the ultimate trans-seasonal layering tool and wear it over your classic T-shirts – or even knotted around your shoulders on milder days. When temperatures drop, pair it with your fine-knit tops as a modern take on twinset dressing.
Sock Pop
Sometimes, the most effective styling updates can also be the smallest. Take a statement sock, for example – a flash of colour at your ankle adds instant interest to an outfit of basics. Pick a plain style in a shade that contrasts with the rest of your look.
Texture Play
Playing with contrasting textures is a simple way to elevate your outfit, and how to do it for AW is with sleek leather and soft knits. Pull on your leather skirt or trousers and top with a luxe jumper, keeping the colours tonal for added polish. This formula works just as well for smart or casual – just adjust the accessories.
