8 Styling Updates To Refresh Your Classics For Spring

Tie A Silk Scarf
Ever since Audrey Hepburn knotted a striped foulard around her neck in Roman Holiday, the addition of a silk scarf has been a fail-safe styling tip. While the past few years have seen them wrapped around handbag straps and tied under chins as headwear, this season it’s all about wearing them neckerchief-style. Pick a colourful or printed design – or both – for a quick and easy way to brighten up neutral knits and jackets.
Try A Brooch
If you thought brooches were confined to the fiddly styles found in antique shops, think again. The new breed of decorative pins focus on sculptural designs that feel thoroughly modern and will immediately breathe new life into the blazers and tailored jackets hanging in your wardrobe. If you’re going big on a brooch, keep the rest of your jewellery to a minimum.
Go Monochrome
At this time of year, a palette cleanse often feels like a tempting idea. A black and white pairing, though classic, always manages to feel fresh – and there’s a good chance you already have plenty of options to choose from. Pull out your favourite pieces and mix and match them together.
Add Aviators
A pair of opticals really does have the ability to change the mood of your outfit – especially when they are statement frames. Outsized aviators continue to take centre stage, so if you’re looking for a new shape to invest in, this is the one to consider. Choose a classic colourway – brown, black, tortoiseshell or gold.
Elevate Hair Hardware
Swiftly installed to make even the most hurried of hairstyles look polished, reach for a barrette, claw clip or hair tie in gold or silver to add a flash of luxe to everyday outfits. And for the evening, a simple hair twist secured with a French pin will look understatedly elegant whether you’re going to the pub or heading for dinner.
Mix Up Your Colour Pairings
You needn’t pack away your chocolate brown pieces yet – maximise their styling scope as we head into warmer weather by teaming them with yellow. A head-to-toe look works well – think your brown tailored trousers with a primrose T-shirt or shirt. If you feel a pull towards neutrals, add in an element of cream. Finish by layering on gold jewellery.
Switch To Silver
If you’ve been wedded to yellow gold jewellery for a while, mix things up by introducing silver. Chunkier, sculptural pieces feel especially relevant this season. Swap thick chains for statement armwear – think Tiffany’s iconic Elsa Peretti bone cuff (or a smart-price homage). Combine them with your existing gold favourites, or go for a full silver look.
Finish With A Belt
An often overlooked styling note, adding a belt to your trousers and jeans will give them a new lease of life. Make sure you pick a good leather style (pleather can stretch), or go for suede for spring-ready texture. Black, brown and tan styles have versatility and will work with most colours and denim washes.
